Began playing tennis at age five at tennis center in hometown of Valasske Mezirici and soon became a top junior. Won Czech Republic 12-under junior title and moved to city of Prostejov where there were more practice partners and better coaching. Won the prestigious 18-under national title in the city of Pardubice, which boasts Ivan Lendl as a former champion.
Turned Pro in 2002 with improving 800 positions.
In 2003 made ATP debut at US Open as qualifier, reaching 2nd RD in first Grand Slam event. In Davis Cup debut, won doubles rubber (w/Novak) vs. Thailand in World Group playoff and won dead rubber match over Udomchoke.
Claimed his first career ATP title in Palermo while finishing in Top 50 for first time in 2004. Reached QF at Athens Olympics with wins over Mayer, No. 1 Federer (last player to beat him during year) and Robredo before falling to Dent. Two weeks later, reached 4th RD at US Open
In 2005 made a 3rd RD showing at Wimbledon and add his first career ATP Master Series title in Paris where he defeated five consecutive seeds, climbed from 50 to No. 25. Turned in a 3rd RD result at US Open. Top 10 opponents with wins over in 2005 Nadal in Cincinnati, Coria and Ljubicic in Paris.
Opened 2006 with SF in Adelaide, reached 4th RD at ATP Masters Series Indian Wells. Followed with 3rd RD in Miami. At US Open he lost to Blake in 4th RD. Advanced to 4th RD at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, in between a runner-up in Halle (lost to Federer each time). In August at ATP Master Series Toronto, defeated No. 2 Nadal in 3rd RD. Helped Czech Republic back into ’07 Davis Cup World Group with two wins over the Netherlands. At ATP Master Series Madrid posted back-to-back Top 10 wins over No. 6 Roddick and No. 2 Nadal. Broke into Top 10 for first time on Oct. 23.
